Autumn 2007 Report
This year was one of the more challenging autumn's. The aspen were less vibrant than normal in many areas of the park, it was quite windy and I was very busy with studies which meant I wasn't able to get out as much as I had hoped. One of my favorite fall ponds had developed some type of algae which made it less than photogenic. Despite all of this, I managed to get a few autumn photos that I am fairly pleased with. I hope you enjoy them.
#744: This is typically the last grove of aspen in Rocky Mountain National Park to turn each year. Usually after I shoot this grove, the snow falls and it is time for winter. After shooting this in the morning I now hear that they are predicting a large snowstorm for tonight, so I guess that is about par for course. I took this while the elk were bugling nearby. In the background are Notchtop Mountain and Gabletop Mountain along the Continental Divide. Photo ©2007 by Erik Stensland.

#742: I had just finished a morning of shooting at Chasm Lake and was on my way back. As I hiked through Chasm Meadow, I stopped to enjoy the view of Longs Peak and saw that the grasses had taken on their autumn colors and the stream lead my eye up to Longs Peak and the clouds which were quickly blowing over it. #733: This was taken before dawn on a blustery morning just after the first significant snowfall on the Continental Divide. The aspen trees were golden and delightful, but I wasn't able to keep the leaves in sharp focus as it was blowing too strongly and the image conveys this. Photo ©2007 by Erik Stensland.

#729: The sky was mostly clear this autumn morning apart from a few clouds which clung tightly to the summit of Hallett's Peak and Otis so I set out to find a good place from which to capture this for sunrise. It was cold and windy outside and I began to get worried that the sun wouldn't find a way through the clouds on the eastern horizon, but then about 10 minutes after sunrise the warm morning light broke through and provided a beautiful scene. #726: Most people have an image of bright yellow aspen when they think of autumn in the Rockies, but one of the best shows to be seen is on the alpine tundra where grasses turn red and small bushes display colors that rival the aspen. This shot was taken as a storm developed in the west as Snowdrift Peak looks on to see what will happen to this poor photographer. :-0 Photo ©2007 by Erik Stensland.

I also managed to capture a number of other images from this autumn which are not your traditional fall photos. You can find some of them on the "New images page".
